A survey released by Māori Affairs Minister Pita Sharples shows that the 76 metre long waka was rated as the top Rugby World Cup attraction in 2011, ahead of the Fanzone, Cloud entertainment centre and the Real New Zealand Festival.
The $2 million Waka Māori initially attracted opposition, however a survey completed by 180,000 visitors shows the waka received an 8.2 out of 10 satisfaction rating.
The purpose-built boat showcased Māori contribution to New Zealand’s artistic, cultural, sporting and economic life.
Visitors spent an average $50 each in Waka Maori. Dr Sharples says that added up to $9 million for Auckland’s economy.
