A Samoan mother has named her triplets Ao, Tea and Roa in honour of giving birth to them in New Zealand.
Samoa’s infant mortality rate is four times higher than New Zealand’s.
Thanks to a scheme funded under Government aid, Samoan women now have the option to travel to New Zealand to have their babies here so that they are able to receive higher neo-natal care for the infants in New Zealand than what they would receive in Samoa.
Ao, Tea and Roa’s Samoan mother travelled to New Zealand under this scheme.
Sadly, one of the triplets has contracted meningitis and is now in Middlemore hospital’s Kidz First unit. It’s not sure how the baby contracted the disease but hospital staff have said that the baby boy is stable and responding well to antibiotics.
The mother is said to be grateful the baby did not get sick in Samoa, as he can receive better care in New Zealand.
